Practical, honest advice for a smooth, low-stress and low-cost pilgrimage — from a fellow traveller, not a sales brochure.

📋 Before you go

Book early & avoid Ramadan if on a budget — Ramadan is the most crowded and most expensive time. Off-peak months are far cheaper.
Use Nusuk for your visa — the official platform. Beware unlicensed agents (check them in the Samir app before paying).
Vaccinations — meningitis (ACWY) is required; keep your certificate. Check current health rules on the Saudi MoH site.
Photocopy documents — passport, visa, vaccination card. Keep digital copies in your phone and email.

Comfortable, broken-in shoes — you will walk a lot. Easy to slip on/off for prayer.
Unscented toiletries — in ihram, scented products are not allowed.
A small bag for shoes at the Haram, plus a refillable bottle for Zamzam.

Note your gate number and a landmark — it is very easy to get lost. Save your hotel in the Samir app so the compass can guide you back.
Avoid peak crush times for Tawaf if you can (right after Fajr and around Maghrib are busiest).
Stay hydrated — drink Zamzam, carry water; the heat is intense.
Learn a few Arabic phrases — "where is gate…", "I am lost". The free Learn Arabic course → covers these.

Don't buy "unlimited" travel eSIMs — they're the worst value. A small eSIM to land + a local visitor SIM in the city is cheapest.
Carry some cash (SAR) for small shops and tips; cards work in most places.
